THE RETREAT YORK
PROVIDER OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE
Financial health, per its FY2025 accounts
The accounts state that the charity achieved a significant improvement in its financial position during the year, moving from negative free reserves in 2024 to £6.4m in 2025, largely due to the completion of a property sale. However, the trustees report a continuing operating deficit of £1.26m and note that the organisation is still seeking alternative income streams to reach a break-even position within the next five years. The charity remains dependent on securing future funding and managing its cost base to ensure long-term sustainability.
What the accounts disclose
“It is the policy of the charity to maintain undesignated funds, which are the free reserves of the charity, at a level sufficient to cover between 6 and 18 months of expenditure, a range between £1,200,000 and £3,600,000.” — page 10
“The financial stability of the organisation has been, for a number of years, dependent upon the successful sale of a large part of the estate to a local developer. The decision to sell off the estate began in 2018 with completion on 8th April 2025. Finalisation of the sale has provided financial security of the organisation for the foreseeable future and the organisation is exploring various options to secure additional income to further stabilise the finances for the long-term sustainability of the charity.”
“Dr David Robson (Clerk to the Trustees of The Retreat) made an unsecured loan of £25,000 to the charity on 5th December 2024, with no interest payable. This loan was repaid in full on 14th February 2025”
“The charitable company owns the whole of the issued ordinary share capital of Cottage Villa Limited, a company registered in England (company number 09650020). The company was set up to collect rents from The Retreat York's Learning Disability Service.” — page 32
